Careers

The roles we recruit for.

Mortgage work rewards people who are precise about detail and straightforward with clients, in that order. Below is what each role involves and what it requires.

Current openings are listed here when there are any. When there are none, registering an interest is still worth doing.

Roles

Four kinds of job.

Mortgage adviser

Advising clients and recommending products. Requires an appropriate Level 3 mortgage qualification recognised by the FCA — CeMAP or equivalent — held before advice is given, plus assessment as competent and ongoing supervision.

Level 3 mortgage qualification required

Mortgage administrator

Preparing and submitting applications, chasing documents, and dealing with lenders and conveyancers through to completion. No advice qualification needed, though many people study for one while doing it.

No qualification required to start

Protection adviser

Advising on life cover, income protection and critical illness cover alongside a mortgage. Requires the relevant qualification for the products advised on.

Compliance and file review

Checking that advice given meets the regulatory standard, that suitability is evidenced, and that disclosures were made when they should have been. Experience of the FCA's mortgage rules matters more than a specific certificate.

What we look for

Common to every role.

Non-negotiable

  • Accuracy with figures and documents, because an error here costs a client a house rather than a report a correction.
  • Willingness to tell a client something they do not want to hear, promptly.
  • Discretion with personal financial information, and an instinct for handling it carefully.

Valued

  • Experience of self-employed, contractor or portfolio cases, which are where judgement matters most.
  • Familiarity with lender criteria across more than one or two names.
  • A record of finishing cases rather than starting them.

Current openings

There are no advertised vacancies at the moment. When there are, they are listed here with the location and the working arrangement, rather than only on a job board.

A firm this size recruits irregularly, so the absence of a listing is not a reason to hold off — most of the people we have taken on wrote to us first.

Speculative applications

We read them. Send a CV and a short note saying which of the roles above fits and why, to info@astarmortgages.uk.

If there is nothing open, we will say so rather than leave it unanswered.

How we handle your application

A CV sent to us is personal data, and is handled in line with our privacy notice. It is kept for as long as is necessary to consider it and for a reasonable period afterwards in case something suitable arises, and it is not shared outside the firm.
